Halls and Walls to honour lifetimes of sporting accomplishments

Hall of Fame and Wall of Fame events to take place in Fredericton, St. Stephen and Halifax this weekend and next

As the seasons officially transform from the last of the winter pursuits to the intensity of spring training and competition, a number of Sports Hall and Sports Wall of Fame ceremonies are slated for a large number of deserving New Brunswickers this weekend and into next week.

They begin with Sports Wall of Fame events in Fredericton and St. Stephen on Saturday and continue with recognition of a New Brunswick volleyball player next week in Halifax.

In Fredericton on Saturday, a championship baseball team, a multi-sport, athlete-coach-administrator, another coach and two sports journalists comprise the 2024 Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame.

The Fredericton Sports Investment event will kick off just before 5 p.m. receptions and the unveiling of the plaques and continue with a dinner and the awards ceremony in the evening.

This year’s class consists of the 2006-10 Fredericton Peterbilt DQ Royals baseball teams, former Fredericton Daily Gleaner sports writers Bruce Hallihan and Bill Hunt; multi-sport, athlete, coach and administrator Carol Mulholland and longtime rugby coach Bob Cockburn.

The proceedings will take place Saturday at the Delta Hotel by Marriott.

Additionally, football coach Vince Sturgeon will receive the Dr. William McGillivary Award as the volunteer of the year and baseball player Max Grant and hockey player Josh Lawrence will be awarded the Myer and Jack Budovitch Award as the city’s top athletes.

In St. Stephen on Saturday, one athlete, one team and two builders will be honoured for their contributions and excellence in sport when the Greater St. Stephen Sports Wall of Fame inducts its Class of 2024.

Athlete Michael Sweeney, the 1978-82 St. Stephen Sabres baseball teams and sports builders Judy Wilson and John Howard Crocker will be honoured for their dedication and success at the Wall of Fame’s sixth annual induction ceremony and dinner.

The ceremony is slated for Saturday at the Garcelon Civic Centre in St Stephen. There will be a social hour from 5-6 p.m. as well as a silent auction before the 6 p.m. dinner and ceremony.

On May 8 in Halifax, Saint John native Tara MacIntyre Olesen will be inducted into the Dalhousie University Sports Hall of Fame as part of its class of 2024.

In her three years at Dalhousie, she was a two-time Atlantic Universities Athletic Association most valuable player in volleyball, three-time AUAA champion, two time all-Canadian as well as enjoying duty in the national team program, winning a bronze medal at the Pan Am Games in 1995, as well as appearances at the World University Games.

She is a member of the Volleyball Canada Hall of Fame (team) in 2004, the Volleyball New Brunswick Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Saint John Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.

She later coached at Dal in the 1996-97 and 2002-03 seasons, winning the conference title in 02-03.
